Marine police are standing by after receiving information that a migrant boat which is carrying around 80 people en route from Lebanon to Rhodes, was sailing close to Cyprus, state radio said on Tuesday night.
CyBC said Cypriot authorities were on the lookout for the boat, estimated to be currently 60 to 70 nautical miles off the island’s coast, had not yet been detected on radar. The boat is expected to pass south of Larnaca heading towards Rhodes, a much longer journey than crossing from Lebanon, past the Karpas peninsula and taking a route south of Turkey.
