Larnaca mayor Andreas Vyras inspected the renovation works of the Akropoleos and Alkis squares on Thursday, assuring local shop owners and residents affected by the project that the municipality will remain in constant contact with the community to minimise disruption.
The project, which is expected to last around 20 months and cost over €4 million, involves the redevelopment of the Akropoleos and Alkis squares, as well as the reconstruction of nearby roads, including Louki Akrita, Orfeos, and sections of Gladstonos, Konstantinou Kalogera, and Grigori Afxentiou vvenue.
The renovation is funded by the EU’s Cohesion Policy Programme ‘Thalia 2021-2027’ and is part of Larnaca’s development strategy.
The works include widening pavements, upgrading the stormwater drainage system, undergrounding utilities, and installing modern urban equipment to enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of the area. Special attention will also be given to ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities.
Vyras said during his visit that temporary traffic and vehicle access changes will occur during the works but assured that residents and shop owners will retain pedestrian access to their properties.
Affected residents and workers in the area will also have access to free parking at a new municipal car park opposite the Pancyprian Lyceum of Larnaca.
The redevelopment of the Akropoleos and Alkis squares is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026.
