It used to be the case in Larnaca that you would have to go right into the busy Phinikoudes street to find a decent coffee shop but in recent times small establishments with good quality coffee and a good atmosphere have been popping up everywhere.
One that fits into this category is Ace Sports bar and, as the name suggests, rather than just a place where people go to chat, it themes itself on offering sporting entertainment both on screen and within the café itself.
After plenty of planning in the works, Ace opened its doors at the end of September and is looking to offer something slightly different through the various activities available. There is a large café area with both comfortable couches and ordinary wooden chairs where the majority of the everyday socialising takes place. But further inside, there are a series of pool and foosball tables, and as well as a bit of fun, the bar hosts regular tournaments for the two games.
The same is also done for popular card game ‘pilotta’ as well as the frequent hosting of bingo nights while it also shows all of the big football matches thanks to its various plasma screens around the shop.
On the menu, there is plenty to choose from but nothing out of the ordinary. With coffee the main order throughout the day, the quality is good and at reasonable prices, between €2 and €3 for most things in the beverage department. There is also a good selection of food, with a variety of salads (including Caesar and Tuna), a list of baguettes, club sandwiches and burgers which are again at a good price range. It certainly is not restaurant quality but is good value for money at around €5 to €8.
Ace is situated near Ermou, close to the town’s busy shopping district but still somewhat in its own space secluded from the mad rush that takes place on weekends. During the day, it tends to gather mainly youngsters from the nearby schools but in the evenings and weekends, people of all ages gather, especially for its various live events.
