A 44-year-old man from Ayii Anargyri, Paphos, was arrested on Monday night and will be charged with attempted armed robbery, after he tried to rob a kiosk in Larnaca by brandishing a fake pistol, police said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, Larnaca police chief Charalambos Zachariou said that at around 7pm on Monday, a man “who had covered his face”, entered a kiosk in Papanicolis Avenue, Larnaca, and asked the owner for the money under threat of a pistol.

“Armed robbery – give me your money,” the suspect said.

Zachariou added that the kiosk owner, 65, hid behind a refrigerator in order to avoid the robber.

But the 44-year-old left the scene shortly thereafter, without stealing anything.

According to Zachariou, “police investigations and information received resulted in the issuance of an arrest warrant against a 44-year-old, who was spotted and arrested”.

During questioning, the 44-year-old confessed to the attempted robbery, and handed investigators the pistol he used – which turned out to be a plastic toy.

The man was charged and released on Tuesday, to appear before the Larnaca District court at a later date.
