The animal party on Tuesday called on civil aviation to do something about the plethora of drone cameras people were using at the Larnaca Salt Lake to photograph flamingos up close.

Thousands of people have flocked to the salt lake in recent weeks to witness the influx of the migratory bird.

“Some of them tried to enter into the salt lake to get as close as they could to photograph the flamingos,” the party said, adding that not only was that an annoyance to the birds but so was the amount of traffic, noise and pollution created in the area.

But what was most worrisome, the party said was the number of unmanned drones flying over the lake at low altitudes “sending the birds panicking and flying in all directions”.

It asked civil aviation to do something about the issue. As an aircraft, drones come under aviation laws.

According to legislation, the party said, all types of airborne craft should be kept a safe distance of at least eight kilometres from airports and landing strips, and at a safe distance of three kilometres from heliports.  ‘The salt lake is only a stone’s throw from the airport therefore should not wrongdoers be penalised,” it said.
