A 40-year-old Greek man was jailed for four months on Monday for causing the death of 17 hunting dogs last year, the Animal Party announced.
Michael Lysgaris, a resident of Tsiakkilero, Larnaca, was also ordered to pay a fine of €100, head of the Animal party, Kyriacos Kyriacou, said.
“We follow all the court cases”, he said, “and we welcome the increased sensitivity this sentencing shows.”
The dogs were found dead at a breeding facility in Aradhippou in June 2015.
Lysgaris had neglected to feed and give them water for around three weeks, police told the court at the time.
Nobody else fed them during this time and they died of starvation.
Authorities found 17 dead hunting dogs, and six more alive. Of these, four had been malnourished and two had been strays wandering outside the establishment’s fence.
In January this year, a Larnaca court handed down a two-month suspended prison sentence to a man who was supposed to run a shelter for dogs for the municipality but instead maltreated, starved, and set them alight to get rid of them.
When non-profit organisation Argos discovered the place on August 2, 2014, they said they found 20 malnourished animals, others which had died from starvation and a pit with the charred remains of dead dogs.
The attorney-general has appealed the sentence.
