Port workers who are members of PEO and SEK unions have announced they will stop work for one hour on Thursday at the Larnaca and Limassol ports, to mark international dockers action day, set for July 7.
The work stoppage will take place between 7.30am and 8.30am.
This will be the first time that a global collective action has taken place, an announcement said, aiming “to raise awareness on the vital contribution dockworkers make to the world economy, and the risks they face at work every day”.
Using the slogan ‘Defend Dockers Rights’ dockers are calling for improved health and safety in the workplace, an end to job deregulation, respect for bargaining rights and collective agreements, the need for universal labour standards, the concerns over automation processes in terminals and social justice.
“The dock workers through the one-hour work stoppage send a loud and clear message that not only will they not remain impassive but they are fighting back,” the two local unions said.
