Looking for a good restaurant in Larnaca, the automatic thought is to head towards the town centre past the many eateries on Phinikoudes or the increasingly popular Makenzy strip. However, a little bit of looking around can lead you to areas where you would not expect to find a luxurious yet down-to-earth establishment.
Tucked away in a residential area, not too far from the hustle and bustle of the main town centre, is a refreshingly classic restaurant which from the outside has the appearance of a modest and traditional house.
Its paved walkway leads you into the interior of the building. Though the outside has a slightly older appearance, the inside is anything but. With sleek wooden flooring, a stone wall in the background, and light-coloured furniture, it offers a very open and welcoming vibe.
Just as warm is the greeting received by owner Vassos, who is there with a smile and a greeting before guiding you to your table. In this a family-run restaurant, service stands out from the typical niceties received at the more impersonal establishment.
Open and lightly lit, the outside space creates a very serene backdrop to the important issue of eating.
While its German name could suggest that the menu offers dishes predominantly from that part of the world, the cuisine is mainly Cypriot with some very creative dishes added in.
For starter, there was avocado and shrimp in a cocktail sauce, rich tortellini with crispy bacon which were made with plenty of care and precision. There is also homemade pumpkin soup or – a bit more summery – the smoked salmon in a mustardy sauce.
One of their most prized main dishes is the salmon fillet cooked in a ginger and orange sauce. This will be a winner for those who do not like overly rich, creamy dishes, as it is light and served simply with rice and fresh vegetables.
Alternatively, for meat-eaters, there is the ‘pikilia’ which is an assortment of grilled meat which can serve three to four people with a variety of sides. Meanwhile, the chicken breast filled with a light, honey and mustard sauce is also one to ignite the taste buds, served with mash potato and fresh season vegetables.
The portions are adequate, meaning that you are not left completely full, but they are by no means small. You appreciate them for the flavour rather than the quantity, and there’s enough room for dessert.
For dessert, it is hard to best their extremely flavoursome and rich chocolate cake which is served with ice cream.
Every Friday night at Landhaus, there is a live music band which adds to the already warm atmosphere. The bands are usually local to Larnaca and provide a wonderful backdrop to the experience without being intrusive.
For those seeking an open and warm ambience, accompanied by excellent service and good food, Landhaus is worth hunting down.
