Police on Saturday were investigating an attempt to break into a co-op bank in the Larnaca area in the early morning hours.

Police said a patrol was dispatched at the scene after the alarm at the Makrasyka branch in Anglisides went off at around 3am.

Officers found that the would-be thieves had broken the glass of one of the emergency exit doors in the front of the building.

The branch manager arrived just before 4am and gave police access to the security camera footage, which recorded the perpetrators trying to break in.

Security footage showed a car parking on the street in front of the branch but its registration was not visible.

A tall, stocky, individual wearing a ski mask and a sweat shirt with a hood got out of the car and headed for the door.

The individual, who was wielding what looked like a screwdriver, repeatedly kicked the glass door and then hurriedly returned to the vehicle, which headed towards a rural area.

The branch manager and another employee confirmed that nothing was missing from the bank.
