Larnaca municipality launched on Thursday a programme to spruce up its buildings and standardise signage, aiming to improve the image of the coastal town.
A pilot programme is to be first applied in Saint Lazarus Square, then gradually expanded to other areas.
“The improvement of Larnaca’s image will begin from the historic square of St Lazarus and we hope that it will become an example to the other areas of our town and district,” said Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras, who welcomed the interest shop owners expressed in the scheme.
As part of the project – which is expected to be implemented in October – all tasteless signs on buildings will be removed and replaced with a uniform design and the facades of buildings will be restored where necessary. Other interventions include addition of greenery and the introduction of uniform umbrellas.
In addition to improving the image of Larnaca, the wider goal is to cultivate consciousness for a more attractive city, both for residents and visitors.
The programme is being implemented in cooperation with the Larnaca Tourism Board, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and Concept Consulting Group.
Victor Mantovani of the Larnaca Tourism Board, said that this is the only way for Larnaca to become a remarkable tourist destination.
“Just like other European cities that respect their history and have aesthetics, Larnaca too has to be upgraded by preserving its character and identity,” Mantovani said.
