Authorities have issued a new warning to the public not to bother the flamingoes at Larnaca Salt Lake as it might impact their migratory habits.
The Game Fund issued a reminder to the public that people who want to see or take pictures of flamingos should not enter the lake or approach them because it disturbs their natural habitat. The use of drones has also become a problem of late.
“If the flamingos are continuously disturbed by intruders, then the birds may leave these areas before they manage to gather the necessary energy required for the journey back to their nesting sites,” the service said.
The birds arrive in Cyprus when weather conditions are favorable to feed and overcome the winter, before they depart again towards their natural nesting areas mainly in Turkey, Italy, France, Spain, it added.
If they end up using their strength to flee from intruders instead of resting and feeding, it reduces their chances to breed and survive the winter and may never return to Cyprus.
Those visiting the site are advised to be discreet and admire the spectacle from a distance that is safe for the birds. People should not enter the lake, but should use the observatories found around it.
