When summer fades away, many places lose their appeal until the warmer months come round again. However, even on a wet and rainy day, a beach bar in Larnaca was at full capacity. Clearly they are doing something right! Lush beach bar resto is in the Makenzie area and while the beach bar doesn’t operate in the winter months, the restaurant continues to thrive.
Upon entering we were greeted by a friendly hostess who guided us to a table and ensured that menus were brought to us promptly. The wooden chairs and tables gave an earthy, calming feel. As we sat we noticed a rather large and classy looking wine cellar.
Despite being a rainy, windy day, the view was still great. The sight of large waves frothing up and crashing on the shore while the palm trees seemed to be dancing in the wind was a mesmerising sight.
An extensive and well-presented menu offered a good variety of local and international dishes.
So my dining partner and I could sample as much as we could, we ordered a variety of different dishes and shared them. It was a bit of a random selection: a carrot and ginger soup to start with, followed by spaghetti carbonara but having walked past the sushi station on our way in we couldn’t help but order some maki – the spicy tuna maki and the caterpillar roll. For good measure, we added flamed edamame flavoured with lemon.
While waiting for the food we were brought warm, homemade, fresh bread that was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside accompanied by a small ball of goat cheese for each person at the table. The temptation to finish the whole thing and ruin our appetites was there but we held back so we could enjoy the food we had ordered.
The soup came and the kitchen had split it into two smaller bowls for us as we had informed the waiter of our wish to share each dish. The half portion was perfect as a starter. The soup itself had a good balance between the two flavours of ginger and carrot and was served with crunchy croutons on the side. We opted to ignore the croutons and instead ate the delicious fresh bread with the soup; it was the perfect accompaniment.
Next out was the carbonara. One of the first things I noticed was the large mushrooms! The creamy carbonara sauce was flavoursome and not too rich with a generous helping of bacon. While we were enjoying our carbonara, the rest of the food came out. The edamame was covered in large chunks of rock salt which gave them extra flavour. The lemon flavour was brilliant, leaving a slight sharp sensation on the tongue.
The maki was very well presented and it was almost a shame to dig in. It was soft and literally melted in the mouth. It was extremely tasty and the flavours complemented each other so well. However, the maki rolls were not tightly packed enough which made them a little fragile when holding them with chopsticks and dipping into the soy sauce.
The service was very good throughout despite the restaurant being extremely busy.
