Two men injured in Phinikoudes brawl

Two Polish men were injured on Wednesday night during a brawl in Larnaca involving around 50 people, police said.

One of the men, 39, was diagnosed with a broken nose and fractures to various parts of his body. His condition was not life threatening. The second man, a 32-year-old, suffered eye injury. He was treated and referred to an eye specialist for further tests.

Police said at 11.50pm they were notified that a group of youths from Poland got into a fight with Cypriots in the Phinikoudes area because the latter were recording them on video without their permission.

Officers went to the area but found nothing.

Around 90 minutes later, police were notified that a fight had broken out in the area.

Officers who arrived on the scene found a group of Polish nationals, in Cyprus to attend tonight’s football game between Polish side Jagiellonia and Omonia Nicosia for the Europa League qualifying stages.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, police were told that around 25 Polish nationals had argued among themselves and then some of them left the area.

Those who stayed, were attacked by 30 to 40 people, possibly Cypriots, who appeared in the area from various directions.

The fight lasted a few minutes with those involved dispersing at the arrival of the police.

Police managed to locate nine Polish nationals in the area who could not give a statement or more information about the fight because they were in a state of drunkenness.

Officers took their details and drove them to the place they were staying.
