The finishing touches have just been put to the promenade renovation of the Piale Pasha area in Larnaca comprising large concrete ‘pebbles’ as seating.
The new seats have been a huge hit, according to the company that made them, Castle Play Systems Ltd in Larnaca.
According to company director Panayiotis Antoniou, who used to run a stone company in the UK, they created 40 of the made-to-order pebble seats, 16 traditional stone benches with a wooden seat and 27 bins for the 2.1km promenade. Each of the pebbles weighs a whopping 600kg, he said.
They are made from hand-crafted concrete and custom made for the promenade but had to be lifted into place with cranes and forklifts. “There is no way any human being could lift one of those,” he said, adding that it was good for people to know that Cyprus still has the capabilities to manufacture “and that not everything is imported from abroad”.
All that remains now for Piale Pasha is to allocate suitable parking areas, a process that is already underway and is due to be completed by the end of next month.
The plans for the renovation of the area also include doing up the facades of the buildings in the Skala area and the creation of a wooden pier to give greater access for swimmers and for fishing.
The new Piale Pasha Avenue spans a total length of 2.1 km starting from the Medieval castle on the far side of the Phinikoudes seafront.
