Restaurant review: Sto Ano Kato, Larnaca

As if the Christmas holidays hadn’t provided enough food, I ventured into town on a wet, blustery evening with my partner for a bite to eat. With nowhere in particular in mind we walked past what looked like a fairly low key, laid back café bistro along Zinonos Kitieos street. Sto Ano Kato looked like something we’d enjoy so we decided to get some warmth and shelter from the weather and give it a go.

As soon as we entered, we were approached by Tassos, the owner. He was friendly and welcoming. Not only did he show us available tables but advised us on which one would be better for us as it was closer to the heater. Sto Ano Kato had an international vibe but a good blend of local customers too. This is likely due to the good relationship they have with the neighbouring Art and Wine Studios and apartments who have entrusted Sto Ano Kato with providing breakfast for their guests.

The interior was warm feeling. The lighting was dim but the place was perfectly lit by the Christmas lights and the indoor heaters. There was a brick detail overlooking the bar area which gave it character.

Now that we were nice and cosy in our seats, we were brought the menu. It wasn’t overloaded, which can sometimes lead to confusion about what to order, but in my opinion had the perfect amount of variety. And everything was very reasonably priced! After narrowing down our options, I decided to go for the thyme lamb chops while my partner couldn’t resist the Sirloin steak. I was interested to see what the steak was like as I am often dubious about steaks that are not from a specialised steakhouse.

We also ordered a goat’s cheese salad to share as a starter. I’m glad we did. The salad consisted of mixed greens, marinated green vegetables, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, dry figs in commandaria wine and baked goat’s cheese dressed with raspberry vinaigrette. The vegetables were fresh and crunchy, the amount of dressing was just right and the warm goat’s cheese was plentiful and delightful. It was a good size and perfect to share as a starter.

Not long after the mains arrived. I was presented with five juicy lamb chops, grilled vegetables and chips, all very neatly presented. The steak I had been eager to see also arrived. I must say, it was a very good size. It was also tender and cooked excellently. My partner chose to have mash potato as a side. The dish was also served with a little pot of mustard. I was offered a piece to try and was very impressed. Despite usually being a rib eye man, this sirloin was succulent and tasty!

I was asked if I would like some mint sauce with my lamb chops and yet again, pleased that I said yes as it was a great complement to the lamb. The lamb chops were juicy and cooked just right. Sometimes at restaurants, lamb chops consist of a long bone and hardly a mouthful of meat on the end. These definitely were not like that. I savoured every mouthful and thoroughly enjoyed my meal.

After we had finished, I noticed a door at the back of the restaurant and went to investigate. Behind it was a lovely little courtyard with a wooden deck floor. Although it was cold and blustery that evening, I could picture being sat out there with a cool drink with friends on a warm summer evening or with a coffee on a Sunday morning with a good book. Something I will definitely have to try once the weather changes!

Taking in to consideration the quality of the food, the friendliness of the owner and the exceptionally reasonable prices, I will definitely be going back to Sto Ano Kato. If you’re out in town in Larnaca and fancy a bite to eat, I highly recommend giving Sto Ano Kato a try.
