Bar review: Vinaria, Larnaca

It seems as though Larnaca is continually being invested in and improved with new shops, bars and eateries opening in various locations.

In the heart of the city, there used to be an alley way that was not really used for anything in particular. However, what used to be a dormant strip has now developed into a bustling, modern area, appropriately named ‘City Centre’.

In the City Centre you’ll find modern apartment blocks, well known coffee franchises and a couple of bars. One of the bars Vinaria, as the name indicates, specialises in wine.

The bar is modern and stylish. A mixture of high and low seating areas, with stalls and couches respectively giving it a feel of class.

We visited on a week night and, taking this in to consideration, Vinaria was quite busy. Our reserved table was waiting for us and as we sat were handed very extensive menus! You are most definitely spoilt for choice as the menu has 230 different wines! What was quite impressive was that the waiter was able to tell us about wines that we had randomly selected and asked about from the menu. Wanting to support the local wineries, we started with a bottle of Argyrides Viognier, a crisp white wine before moving on to a bottle of Portugese wine. We also ordered a cheese platter. It was a very generous platter and all were very happy. The green pesto cheese was a standout.

The wine was brought in a cooling bucket that was secured off the edge of the table so that it didn’t take up room which is very convenient when you have a giant cheese platter or one of the many tapas they have on offer.

I really liked the small details such as the water glasses. They were made from the bottom half of wine bottles. Very clever.

I’d definitely recommend a visit to Vinaria for a chilled evening with some good wine served by people who care.
