The death of a female domestic worker from India in Larnaca will de investigated thoroughly in depth, a police spokesman said on Friday.

Migrant support group KISA had demanded an independent inquiry into the death of the woman, after she apparently fell from the fifth floor balcony of her employer’s flat last Sunday.

KISA suggested there was an effort to rule the death a suicide, something which the group disputed.

Larnaca police spokesman Charalambos Zahariou said the case was being investigated.

“All possibilities will be investigated in depth,” he told the Cyprus Mail. “After the investigation is finished, we will hand the file to the attorney-general for further instructions.”

Following the woman’s death, KISA asked for an independent inquiry and tests to the young migrant’s body to determine the cause of death.

The fact that the young migrant hit the rails of the balconies below during her fall makes the possibility of suicide implausible, they argued.

Her death, KISA said, was either the result of a criminal act or most probably “an accident in an effort to escape from the flat she was kept in against her will.”

The group claimed her employers had banned the woman from going out and had refused to allow compatriots to see her just a few hours before her death.

They also alleged that the employers, with her agent’s knowledge, had taken the woman to the bank to withdraw her savings and were holding on to her passport with a view of sending her back to her country.
