Having a cocktail in hand with a beach view is many people’s idea of heaven yet for residents of seaside towns from April until late in the year, it is very much an everyday reality.
Makenzy beach is the undisputed place to be during the summer months, not only in Larnaca but for the rest of the island as a series of outdoor lounge cafés provide a unique element to the as recently modest strip near the island’s main international airport.
Having been once a largely deserted beach, with just a few old fish taverns, Makenzy is now home to a whole series of beach bars.
Towards the far end of the strip lies a bar that opened at the same time as many of the others, and it has survived the test of time due to a couple of niche aspects.
Like the rest of the bars on the strip, Fat Tuesday has an outdoor seating area at ground level which is ideal when the temperatures are soaring in the peak of summer.
Yet the real place to be, and which helps it stand out from the rest of the bars in the area, is its upstairs deck. From there you have both a wonderful view of the sea and the beach, and a front row seat to the planes taking off and landing at the airport. At night, it provides a wonderful setting to look at the starlit sky and the planes look even more mesmeric as their lights reflect off the sea.
As well as standard stools surrounding rectangular tables in the main area of the bar, there are some comfy couches and cushions around the perimeter of the upstairs lounge – just make sure you get there early to get a spot.
In the daytime, all types of coffees are on offer while their cocktails really stand out from most of the other places nearby. They certainly do not go easy on the alcohol here, especially with the Long Island Ice Teas. There is also shisha available most nights too, which make it a perfect combo to relax, have a drink and take in the surroundings.
