AN Israeli man was rescued from a cruise ship headed to Larnaca early Friday while the vessel was off the coast of Paphos, after suffering pulmonary edema.
According to a Defence Ministry announcement, the Larnaca Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) was alerted at 6.55am by the “Golden Iris” cruise ship to rescue an Israeli passenger who had suffered pulmonary edema – fluid in the lung that can cause heart failure. The Panamanian-flagged vessel was en route from Rhodes to Larnaca when it made the call.
The patient was transferred to Paphos by a marine police sea patrol boat and was taken to the town’s general hospital. The Israeli Embassy in Nicosia was notified, as was the Haifa JRCC, to inform his relatives, the defence ministry said.
For the man’s rescue, the ‘Nearchos’ search and rescue plan was implemented.
Last week, two air rescue operations got underway to transfer to hospital two German passengers from another cruise ship sailing some 105 nautical miles off the coast of Paphos. One had suffered a heart attack, the other from pulmonary edema.
