The iconic Phinikoudes promenade has housed countless eateries in its time, and it is now the proud home of a Chinese restaurant that is looking to settle into the fabric of the town’s most famous street.
It certainly is not a difficult place to find, situated near the end of the strip, just before the old tower, and with a large Buddha figurine at the entrance, you will be able to spot in an instant. Larnaca is no stranger to Chinese eateries, with the oriental cuisine growing in popularity over the years.
The building is modern and the interior reflects this with its sleek round tables and parquet flooring. The lighting is endearing, not too dim or too bright. With a front row view of the beach, the setting is quite unique for a restaurant of its kind, and especially with long, warm nights ahead, it offers the ideal combination of fine interior and a fairly cool temperature in which to dine. As well as the indoor seating area, there is a patio section along the side of the establishment which is even more pleasant at this time of year.
Onto the food and, like any Chinese restaurant, there is no shortage of options and so the group decided to order a variety of dishes to share.
We ordered a couple of rice dishes cooked with vegetables, as well as a chicken fried rice. Then, there was a dish of mixed vegetables, including corn, onion, peppers and aubergine in a soy sauce – each ingredient was slightly crunchy and complemented the rice perfectly. Their beef sizzle was a combination of meat, peppers, onion, soy sauce and various other contents which, on the whole, had both savoury and sweet elements to it.
One of the dishes they pride themselves upon is the beef or chicken in oyster sauce with mushrooms. This had an array of flavours, much in part to the prominent garlicy taste and the sweetness of grated carrots, and the contents were cooked just right. This went great with the noodles, which had a rich flavour and were evidently fresh from their smooth texture as opposed to being pre-cooked and therefore dry and sticky like some other establishments tend to do.
The food is great value for money, with most of the dishes around the €5 mark which, for its location and quality, is hard to compete with.
The service was top class too, with staff members greeting us quickly upon arrival and from thereon after frequently coming to our table to ask if everything was ok. The dishes were brought within quick succession of each other, and due to the fact that we wanted to try each dish combined with the rest, it made our dining experience far better.
To stand the test of time in such a prime location, one has to make sure that everything is near perfect, from the interior, to quality of food and service. Feng’s has ranked highly in the most important criteria and, as its popularity grows, it will likely embed itself in the fabric of the town.
Fridays and Saturdays tend to be very busy so it is worth making a reservation ahead of time to avoid disappointment, while they also offer a takeaway service.
