The Jewish community in Larnaca has welcomed its new Pentateuch/Torah in an official ceremony, accompanied by live music and dancing, it was announced on Friday.
The ceremony to welcome the Torah took place at the Cyprus Jewish community centre in Larnaca.
According to Jewish tradition, each new Torah is received by a community “like a bride and groom would be welcomed”, and it is transported in a festive way to be deposited in the synagogue.
The writing of the Torah in handwritten parchment, an announcement said, is a laborious work done by a scribe which may take more than a year.
