A 21-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday as a suspect for the murder of Giorgos Mavrommatis, who was found burnt to death in his Larnaca home on Sunday morning after a fire broke out in his bedroom.
Mavrommatis, 76, was found dead at around 7am by firemen who had gone to the house to put out a blaze after being alerted by neighbours.
According to police, the results of the post-mortem examination conducted on Mavrommatis showed that he died violently.
Investigators said they believe the 21-year-old entered the older man’s home to rob him, and when Mavrommatis resisted, the suspect pushed him over, set fire to the bed and fled.
Authorities said the 21-year-old became a suspect after he admitted to the crime while being questioned for an earlier robbery.
The suspect will appear in Larnaca court on Wednesday.
After the fire was extinguished on Sunday, firemen found a camping gas stove in Mavrommatis’ room, which exploded, causing a second blaze in another area of the room.
The 76-year-old was transferred to the Larnaca general hospital where his death was confirmed.
