There are few greater pleasures in life than being on a beach and having a drink, perhaps even having a little snack too, while listening to some live music and, at Cherry beach bar, you can have all of that at once.

Makenzie beach has gained a reputation as not only the ‘go-to’ place in Larnaca but of the whole island as a series of outdoor lounge cafés provide a really unique vibe to the modest strip near the island’s main international airport.

What was once a largely deserted beach, other than a few old fish taverns, when the Phinikoudes promenade held the tag as the most popular spot in town, Makenzie is now the undisputed place to be in the summer months. A long row of beach bars lie side by side, playing out a battle as to which can stand out the most to the droves of people who gather from across Cyprus.

While Ammos sets the benchmark, Cherry beach bar, which opened two years ago, is slowly gaining a solid reputation out of the huge choice available.

In appearance, it is similar in principle to that of its neighbours with comfy cushioned couches around the outside perimeter and tall stools around wooden tables in the middle as well as a central bar. But its focus on getting some very talented live bands to play on almost a daily basis has paid off.

Rather than just playing the repetitive deep house music played at all beach bars nearby, there are live rock groups like Minus One – who are arguably the best on the island – Latin bands, Greek music and also reggae nights to please all types of audiences and tastes.

In the drinks department, all of the drinks you would expect like a variety of imported beers and summer cocktails are available. The menu is quite simple and concise, focusing more on the atmosphere of the bar rather than attempting to impress with a wide variety of signature drinks – which is up to the individual’s intentions whether this is positive or negative.

Every now and again, usually on Fridays but not set in stone, there is a great sushi all-you-can-eat offer for just €10 which is certainly worth it if you love the stuff.
