While it is always a treat to visit a fancy restaurant, sometimes all you want is a simple evening out with friends and family. In such a mood we headed to Fish Bay restaurant hoping for some good old fashioned fish and chips!
Fish Bay isn’t in the location you would expect. Not near the sea or in town but down an obscure street with not much going on. Definitely not somewhere you would pass by if you were feeling peckish and looking for somewhere to grab a bite.
It was a warm evening with a slight breeze so we thought it would be nice to sit outside. However, the outside seating area was just a few small tables on the pavement and wasn’t very pleasant when cars drove past. We went to eat fish, not fumes! So we went indoors.
We arrived fairly early and Fish Bay was empty so we managed to choose a well-positioned table. The indoors was lovely and cool so in the end, sitting inside was a good choice. The ceilings were high, creating a bit of an echo but it wasn’t so bad as there weren’t many people. The nautical theme of the place was charming and the life saver rings with the message of ‘Welcome aboard!’ actually did make me feel welcome! As I sat at the modern, wooden table, I noticed a giant, blue octopus painted on the wall opposite me which was somewhat amusing and made me smile.
To make up for the restaurant not being by the sea, there were large TV screens hung on the wall with videos of beautiful beaches and waves crashing on the shore!
We ordered drinks as soon as we sat down and it didn’t take long for them to arrive – we were all pleased to see that the glasses had been kept in the freezer meaning that our drinks would stay cool.
For a fish and chips restaurant, the menu was actually quite varied. There was, of course, cod and haddock, available fried in batter or grilled. Additionally, there was Kalamari, fish and kalamari combos and even a sweet chilli kalamari. There was also grilled prawns and large mussels! If you aren’t too keen on fish but out with friends who are, there is also grilled chicken and various salads on the menu. All main dishes are served with a choice of chips or rice.
I ordered a combo of fish and kalamari while my father ordered just the kalamari. Everyone else went with the standard fish and chips. It didn’t take too long and the food was out. Our eyes all popped out of our head just like they do in the cartoons when we saw the size of the portions. They were huge! Most definitely more than enough to satisfy even big eaters. We were happy to see that the batter wasn’t greasy at all. It wasn’t as crispy as we had hoped but it was very thick and substantial. My fish was great and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Unfortunately, someone else’s fish was a little hard.
By this time the restaurant had filled up and the waiter was rushed off his feet. For this reason we felt a little embarrassed to say something but after much deliberation we decided to let him know. He seemed genuinely upset that we had not mentioned it sooner. Without any question he whisked it away and brought out another freshly cooked, tasty fish. The kalamari however, was a little tough. Not so much that it was inedible but just a little disappointing. As a result I got fish envy seeing the others tuck in to their giant sized pieces of cod. When I go back for my next round I will most definitely stick to what they specialise in; good ol’ fashioned fish and chips!
