A damaged section of the pedestrian walkway on Piale Pasha street on Larnaca seafront will be completely repaired, the municipality said on Monday.
The damage has been caused by constant wave action.
Pavement in the area will be removed and replaced with reinforced concrete.
“The specific section of the walkway developed problems after the project was completed in 2014. The damage is due to persistent and intense wave activity in the area,” the municipality said.
Special concrete materials will be used for durability, while large boulders will be placed along the coastline to reduce wave impact.
The municipality clarified that the restoration was not part of the original contractor’s agreement. However, recognising the increasing damage, officials have prioritised repairs to ensure public safety.
The initial design and supervision of the Piale Pasha improvement project were managed by the department of public works before its completion in 2014. Since then, the Larnaca municipality has been responsible for maintenance.
The most recent phase of upkeep was completed in October 2024, focusing on structural reinforcements.
“The goal was to fully restore the low-level pedestrian barrier, which had suffered severe weathering due to its proximity to the sea. The concrete had deteriorated significantly, with reinforcement bars suffering complete corrosion,” the municipality added.
Previous maintenance work included the restoration of corroded reinforcements, application of anti-corrosion coatings, and extensive concrete repairs. High-strength concrete mixed with protective additives was used to safeguard the structure from seawater exposure.
Municipal officials stressed that all repair work has been supervised by an experienced civil engineer to ensure the highest construction standards.
