Man dies in fatal traffic accident near Lefkara

An accident on a dirt road in Larnaca turned fatal on Sunday, leading to the death of a 51-year-old Romanian national, named as George Remus Strunoiou.

Police received information at 2.40pm that a man had been injured on a rough road, near the Dipotamos dam, in the area of Kato Lefkara.

Officers arrived to find two immobilised vehicles and an injured man on the ground at the scene.

According to information being assessed by the police, the 51-year-old’s car broke down and another 66-year-old man attempted to park his own car beside the stationary vehicle, to provide assistance via jump leads.

In circumstances under investigation, the 66-year-old ran over and fatally injured the 51-year-old. The older man temporarily left the scene to seek help but returned a short time later accompanied by two other people.

An ambulance was called to transport the injured man to Nicosia general hospital where, despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

The 66-year-old underwent alcohol and drug testing, with negative results. He was arrested on a court warrant and taken in to be questioned, and was later released pending a court summons.

Larnaca traffic police are furthering the investigation.
