Two men were arrested, one late Saturday and one in the early hours of Sunday for offences related to two traffic incidents, one of which included an assault on police, and the other drink driving and abandoning the scene of an accident, police said.

In the first incident in Limassol at around 10pm on Saturday night, a 45-year-old crashed his car into a parked vehicle and fled. Acting on information, police tracked the driver down and following a breathalyser test found he was five times over the limit.

In the second incident in the Larnaca area, officers from the motorcycle unit who were conducting speed checks signalled a taxi driver to stop because he was driving at 84kph in a 50kph zone.

A police report said the driver stopped but when asked for his details he refused, and took off in his car, injuring the officer on the leg.

Other officers chased him down and caught up with him off-road. There, they said, he attacked the officers who tried to arrest him but was detained. The man was identified as a 61-year-old from Dromolaxia. He had not been drinking, police said.

The incident took place shortly after midnight.
