Cyprus authorities detain six men at airport, Islamist ties suspected

Six French-speaking men, three of whom may have “ties to Islamist networks” have been detained at Glafcos Clerides Airport in Larnaca since Saturday night, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Sunday evening.

The six, five Turkish nationals and one Algerian – all French passport holders – aged between 25 and 32, arrived on Saturday night at 7.30 on a flight from Basel in Switzerland, and raised the suspicions of immigration at the airport when they said they had come to Cyprus as tourists for four days.

The men were detained at the airport and according to CNA, authorities who checked with Interpol and Europol, said three of the men, the Algerian and two of the Turks, had ties to “Islamist networks”.

According to Larnaca Press, the British bases, which carries out air strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq, were also informed.

It is expected that on Monday, with the completion of investigations of the police will not allow the six to enter Cyprus and they will be forced to return to Switzerland, CNA said.
